Where Was This Photo Taken?

Drop a photo and, if it still carries GPS data, this tool reads where it was taken and gives you the coordinates with a map link. It reads the real location stored in the file, in your browser, with nothing uploaded. When there is no GPS in the photo, it says so plainly instead of guessing.

When a photo was taken with location turned on, the camera writes the latitude and longitude straight into the file. imgico decodes that into plain decimal coordinates and an OpenStreetMap link, so you can see the exact spot. The map opens in a new tab and your photo is never sent to it, which keeps the whole thing on your device.

Often there will be no location, and that is worth understanding. Nearly every social network and chat app strips GPS data on upload, so a photo saved from the web has usually had it removed already. Rather than invent an answer, imgico tells you honestly that no location is stored. How to find where a photo was taken when it has no GPS

Most photos you find online have no location in them, because the platform stripped it or the camera never recorded it. This tool will tell you that plainly, and it won't invent a place from what the picture shows the way some AI sites claim to. That guessing is unreliable and easy to get badly wrong. But losing the GPS doesn't mean you're stuck. The image itself is full of clues, and a person reading them carefully beats a confident machine guess most of the time. Here is how to actually do it.

Our stance

This tool reads the real GPS stored in a file and nothing more. It will never guess a place from what the photo shows, because that kind of AI guessing is wrong often enough to be worse than useless.

Start with reverse image search

If the photo exists anywhere else online, reverse image search will often find it, and the other copy may name the place. Run it through more than one engine, because they index different corners of the web, and crop to the most distinctive part first, a sign, a spire, an odd roofline, for cleaner matches than the whole frame gives you.

Google Lens

Strongest for landmarks and storefronts, and it reads text in the shot so a half-visible sign can still become a search.

Yandex Images

Unusually good at buildings and scenery, and often better than Google once you are outside the US. Worth trying when Lens shrugs.

TinEye

The one for tracing a picture back to its original source and every place it has been posted since. Great for finding the captioned copy.

Then read the image itself for clues

When no copy turns up online, the photo still has plenty to say. Four kinds of clue do most of the work, and they stack: each one narrows the map until only one place is left standing.

Signage and text

A shop name typed into maps can land you on the exact corner. Even unreadable text helps: the script, a phone number's country code, the side of the road the cars drive on, the shape of the licence plates.

Architecture and plants

Buildings are regional fingerprints, from roof pitch to shutters to the boxy AC units of one country and not another. Palms rule out northern Europe; birches rule out the tropics. A named tower or bridge can be the whole answer.

Sun and shadows

Shadows are a compass and a rough clock. North of the equator the midday sun sits south, so shadows point roughly north; a long shadow means early or late, a short one means noon. It can settle which side of a square someone stood on.

The set around it

A lone crop is hard; a set is not. Photos from the same album, listing or event leak what the crop hid, a caption, a venue name, a date. And a date lets you check that day's weather or work out where the sun really was.

Piece enough of these together and the location falls out on its own, no confident AI guess required.

How do you find where a photo was taken?

A photo taken with location turned on stores GPS coordinates inside the file, in its EXIF data. It all happens in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded anywhere to do it.

Why is there no location on my photo?

Usually one of two reasons. Either location services were off when the photo was taken, so no coordinates were ever written, or the photo has been through a service that removes them. Almost every social network and messaging app (Instagram, Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Discord, Reddit) strips GPS data when you upload, for privacy. So a photo you saved or received online has very likely had its location removed before it reached you.

Can you find the location of a photo that has no GPS data?

No, and imgico will not pretend to. Some sites claim to guess a location from what a photo shows using AI. That guessing is unreliable and easy to get badly wrong, and there is no honest way to present it as an answer. This tool reads only the real GPS coordinates stored in the file. If they are not there, it tells you plainly that there is no location data, rather than inventing one.

Is my photo uploaded to read its location?

No. The file is read entirely on your own device. That is especially important for location, since the coordinates in a personal photo can point straight at your home or a place you visit. Nothing about the image is sent to imgico or to any map provider. The map link only opens a set of coordinates in a new tab; it does not send your photo.

What is geotagging?

Geotagging is when a camera or phone records the GPS position where a photo was taken and saves it inside the image file. It is handy for organising photos by place, but it also means a shared file can reveal exactly where you were. Reading it, and removing it before you share, are two sides of the same thing. When you want to clear it, imgico can remove the metadata from a photo without re-encoding the image.

How accurate is the GPS in a photo?

Under open sky a modern phone is usually accurate to around 3 to 5 metres, because it combines GPS satellites with Wi-Fi and cell positioning. That is close enough to pin the right building. Accuracy falls off indoors and between tall buildings, where it can drift to 20 to 50 metres, and if precise location was off the phone may fall back to cell towers and be hundreds of metres out. So treat the coordinate as the right spot give or take a house, not a surveyor’s mark.

Do iPhones and Android phones geotag photos by default?

iPhones do, as long as Location Services are on for the Camera, which most people allow when they first set the phone up. Android varies by manufacturer and camera app, and on newer versions you also need precise location enabled for a tight fix. The short version: assume a photo you took yourself has GPS in it unless you deliberately turned location off, and check it here if it matters.

How do I turn off location on my photos?

On iPhone, open Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Location Services, find Camera and set it to Never. You can also strip location from a photo you already took: in Photos, open the image, tap Adjust on the location, and choose No Location. On Android it is in the camera app’s own settings, usually called Location tags or Save location, plus the system location toggle. Can you find the location from a screenshot?

Almost never from the file itself. A screenshot is a fresh image your device draws, so it carries no GPS from the original photo, only the details of the screen it was taken on. If the location isn’t visible in the picture, the metadata won’t rescue you. What can still work is looking at what the screenshot shows, a street sign, a skyline, a shopfront, and running that through reverse image search or reading the clues by hand, which is covered below.
